No nominations Feminism/Non-violence Would you like to explore the relationship between sexism and violence? Diane Spaugh and Steve Sumerford of the War Resisters League in Chapel Hill are coming to Guilford Wednesday evening to lead a workshop on Femin ism and Nonviolence. You are invited to come see a slide show, talk with others, and maybe participate in some exercises about this vital issue. Here is Diane's personal statement about feminism and pacifism: "I first defined myself as a pacifist about six years ago, when, as a senior in high school, I began to question what was really happening in Vietnam. I began to under stand the psychology of war the desire to dominate, possess, and control another country. I began to see viol ence as being at the roots of militarism and war. But, I wanted to know out of what ground, what earth did those roots of violence grow. "As my own pacifism became more meaningful to me, I started reading books and articles by such pacifists as Barbara Demin and Dorothy Day. Barbara's writings were especially moving to me. Her understanding of pacifism began to stir in me a real ization an awakening to myself as a woman a fem inist. I began to question and challenge our hierarchial system of dominance: male over female, white over black, our country over 'theirs.' I began to recognize and define patriarchy those attitudes, institutions, and ideas which had-controlled and suppressed me for so long. will be accepted after that hour. Nomination forms may be obtained from the Financial Aid Office and the desk in Founders. The list o* Dana Scholar nominees is available at the information desk in Founders Hall. "Then, I knew where those roots of violence grow. They grow from a soil infested with oppfv-jsion, domination, desire for control, colonization, and imperialism ... I knew then that my struggle could no longer be that of simply a paci fist, but as a radical feminist/ pacifist, creating a new, stronger, more nuturing soil that will give rise to an andro gynous society where violence, oppression, and dominance are only words out of history." Anyone who is interested is welcome to come to the work shop Wednesday, February 8, at 7:00 in Dana Lounge. Child Abuse: Foundation Funds Workshop A Child Abuse Prevention Workshop will be held Thurs day and Friday, Feb. 9 and 10, in Founders Hall on the Guilford College campus. It is being held for personnel of the Greensboro City Schools through a cooperative effort with the Departments of Soc iology, Education and Admin istration of Justice of Guilford College, the Child Abuse Pre vention Services and the Guilford County Protective Services Division of the Department of Social Services. Invited participants for the two-day pilot program will be a four-member team from each of the 21 Greensboro public schools (kindergarten through Grade 2) and staff members of the administrative offices of the public school system. Some of the topics discuss ed will be "North Carolina Child Abuse law and the Public School Administrator and Teacher;" "The Abused and the Abuser;" "Prevention of Child Abuse: Primary and Secondary Interventions;". "Referral Procedures;" ,nd "Community Resources." "Child abuse in all dimen sions social, educational and sexual has been recog nized as a serious national social problem," according to Andy Gottschall, associate professor of sociology and coordinator of the program. "Guilford County, Greens boro and the Department of Child Protective Services, along with various groups, including public schools, women's groups in the com munity, church and health groups, nurses, doctors and police, began to realize the need for a variety of services that went beyond what was currently available at the Department of Social Services. "They gathered to form an organization which ultimately became Child Abuse Pre vention Services and included representatives of all these groups," he explained. "If we are successful," Andy concluded, "the teacher will relate more effectively to the educational needs of the abused and neglected child. "Following a successful evaluation of its effectiveness, tentative plans will project this program to other schools and school personnel." Attendance will be limited to Greensboro Public School Personnel, except with special permission from Dr. Charles McDowell, Gwen Reddick, Pat Daniel, or Andy Gottschall.
